Asthma

Asthma is a long-term chronic condition that affects your airways.  At the moment, there is no cure, but it can be managed.

People suffering from this condition have sensitive airways. These airways become inflamed (also known as a flare-up) when they are exposed to certain triggers. A flare-up can come on slowly over hours, days, or even weeks, or quickly over minutes.

When the airways become inflamed, the narrowing airways cause significant, persistent, and troublesome symptoms. This often causes breathing difficulties, as it is equivalent to breathing through a very thin tube. In addition, it leads to a medical emergency.

Symptoms

  • Persistent cough
  • Wheezing
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Tightening of chest

Causes

  • Pollen
  • Animal Hair
  • Cigarette Smoke
  • Mould
  • Dust
  • Allergens
  • Pollution
  • Workplace Chemicals
  • Can be exercised induced

If you or any of your family suffer from hayfever, eczema or were milk allergic as a child asthma is more likely to develop. Changes of temperature and exercise can also trigger an asthma attack.

Treatment and Prevention

  • Avoid your known trigger -
  • With your GP develop your Asthma Action Plan - Follow the guidelines every day and understand your prescribed medications
  • If you are having a flare up - you are able to get a reliever at your nearest Chemist

Relievers Available Over The Counter:

  • Salbutamol (Ventolin/Zempreon/Asmol/Airomir)
  • Terbutaline (Bricanyl)

Discuss with your community the pharmacist the best approach for yourself.

Your community pharmacist can help with advice as to correct use of asthma inhalers, as they are often difficult to manage effectively, particularly when breathing is difficult. Devices such as spacers will help you to use both reliever and preventer medicines and are invaluable in good asthma treatment.

Every time you collect new medicines for your asthma, get your community pharmacist to check your inhaler technique, and see if you need new spacers or peak flow meters, which measure how well your lungs are working.

Your community pharmacist is there to help you manage your asthma - so you are in charge, not the asthma.
